This event is extremely popular among visitors, as they may get acquainted with new American expressions and words, find answers on their questions, meet native speakers and make fun.
We talked about slang and its use in different situations, about its benefits and drawbacks. Males were excited to listen about car slang. They say they will use such expressions as “to take for a spin” or “behind the wheel”. People had fun while listening to dialogs, that totally consisted of slang and trying to understand their meaning. Young generation was fascinated with American hip-hop slang illustrated by famous song of 50 Cent.

American Corner Saint Petersburg conducts several events to commemorate the African-Americans, who contributed to American history and culture. On February 6 and 13, visitors have a chance to see outstanding movie ‘Beloved’, based on a novel by Toni Morrison, one of the most significant American writer. It tells sad and mystical story about psychological effect of slavery, about motherhood and manhood. The movie being directed by Jonathan Demme makes our visitors a bit closer to authentic American culture and history. On February, 27 we devote our discussion club to Black Hostory Month issue. We will share our opinion concerning the topic, remember the most significant African-Americans and their achievements. As usually a special section of American Corner Saint Petersburg is devoted to Black History Month topic. |
