Meeting on March 3 at the American Corner was devoted to the coming holiday of Women’s Day. Kate Szpila, who hold a post of Pol/Econ Officer of the USA Goverment in her young age, took a presentation “The Evolution of the women’s movement in the U.S.” Firstly she got to know the audience, asked everybody to tell some words about himself. Then she gave the summery of the problem, what involved many questions: “What is the role of a woman in modern society? What are the reasons of the change? What problems does a modern woman have?” Every person had an opportunity to express his own view on this and other raised problems. Of course a question of background of Kate’s of interest in Russia wasn’t forgotten. It came from her childhood, when she dreamt to visit Russia. The audience really enjoyed to have such both young fascinating and professional woman at our Corner. |

“Simple French Guy” as Greg Fifis, SEIC manager, called himself, visited the American Corner for the second time. As he promised earlier, he made a presentation about Paris, city he was born and lived. He told about famous theatres and squares of Paris, museums, universities…and of course about famous small streets with great number of cafes and shops. We learned a lot about Paris night life with its crowded clubs, concerts and musical open-air festivals. It was very fascinating journey! His vivid and smart manner of speech evoked listeners’ attention and a lot of questions. Of course not only Paris was discussed, great number of topics were raised: from the cost of education to the cost of metro’s tickets. And we didn’t notice how two hours had passed. This meeting was in terms of Russian-French cultural relationships. |

Deane Wayne from Australia conducted a presentation “Wildlife of Australia” at the American Corner on February 4th. The presentation has turned out bright, interesting and informative. We interviewed Deane on the significance of the event. “I was very pleased to receive an invite to come and speak at "American Corner" at the town Library. I always enjoy talking with people who have learnt English. So I was amazed to see more than 30 people arrive. Learning a foreign language is not easy, but I can see that it broadens the mind and enables people to reach beyond their own ideas and cultures. So I am very impressed to see that there are so many people here in Yuzhno who have made that effort and are keen to practice their English.”

On 19th January the American Corner welcomed a guest from Vladivostok Elena Verejkina, a coordinator of the Education USA Center. She had very useful information about entering to the USA colleges and universities. Really more and more people were eager to master English and go abroad to study. It was known that American education gave better opportunities to find well-paid job and have career development. Elena told about exchange programs, its advantages and disadvantages, about Educational System of USA, about ways to get individual financial benefit. It was paid a lot of attention to practical methods in preparation for TOEFL; it was an obligatory test you should pass if you wanted to study in the USA. Another good new was that now our readers could use multimedia textbooks, which had been left by Elena. “You should really realize what you want in your life and carefully go the chosen way” were our guest’s words for the audience. |
