American Center presents an elective course on modern American fiction and poetry from 1960-present day.

The course will be conducted by Ross Ufberg who was born and raised in Scranton PA, and has studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel, Hamiton College, in New York State, Smolny College in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Yale University in Connecticut. In addition, he spent several months working with the Estate of Joseph Brodsky, the Nobel-Prize winning Russian-American poet, in 2007.

He is the recipient of various awards for poetry, including an award from the Academy of American Poets for his poem “Traveler’s Prayer.” In 2006 he was awarded a Visiting Scholar Fellowsip from the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, and is a current recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship.

The course being offered will focus on modern American short fiction and poetry, with works by authors such as John Updike, Tom Delilla, Bernard Malamud, Tim O’Brien, W. S. Merwin, Margaret Atwood, Philip Levine, Richard Wilbur, including many others.

The course will be offered on Wednesdays, from 13:30-15:00, beginning in October. The course is open to all students. A sign-up sheet will be available in the American Center, Room 3213.
