Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk American Corner welcomed Richard Maxwell (Canada) on the 21st of April. He covered two topics that are of particular interest to Russians learning English: "False Friends in Russian and English" and "Common stylistic problems for Russian speakers of English." Because native English speakers often understand their Russian counterparts without difficulty, stylistic mistakes are often ignored and thus become "regular usage." Richard's presentation aimed to highlight some of those linguistic problems. At the end of his presentation, he showed a brief slide show of the USS Midway museum, an American Navy aircraft carrier docked in San Diego, California. He briefly covered some examples of systems and procedures aboard the ship and the highly developed delegation and task management that exists in the military.
