On July 21 Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk American Corner welcomed Jonathan Lee Yoo, Political/Economical Officer of Consulate General of the United States of America in Vladivostok. He represented an urgent problem – “Intellectual Property and You”.
Intellectual property is all around us: at home, at school, at work, at play. But from economical point of view intellectual property comes in several different forms: patents, copyrights, trademarks, industrial designs, and trade secrets. Jonathan successfully explained the difference between these terms, showing distinct examples. At the end some conclusions on touched issue and some prescription were made: safeguarding property rights fosters economic growth and attracts investment that will create new jobs and opportunities for all citizens. Otherwise artists stop writing and playing their music, since they are not making money from their creations, people get sick or even die because of counterfeit medicines, companies will not set up factories or stores, and many other harmful consequences can be evoked.
According to Jonathan words, he was greatly impressed that in summer period of vocations so many people have visited his presentation and he promised that it won’t be his last presentation at our American Corner.
