01.12.2011 | Library with Human Books opened in Nizhny Novgorod
One more library appeared in Nizhny Novgorod on November 26 though its collection consisted of very unusual books - they are representatives of various social groups whom 'readers' could check out for a 30-minute 'reading' session.
Ekaterina Romanova, UGRAD'11, organizer of Human Library in Nizhny Novgorod says: "I’ve taken part in Human Library as a “reader” and a “human book” while studying at University of Arkansas, and it’s impressed me so much that I’ve decided to organize this project in Nizhny. I really like that this project successfully combats prejudices and raises awareness about diverse social issues in an entartaining and informal way. It's definitely the strongest side of Human Library".
It turned out that the idea of Human Library appealed to many others since there were about 200 participants who came to meet human books, 18 in total. Among them there were a hitchhiker, gay, family with adopted children, young school teacher, orphan, transsexual, HIV positive, muslim woman, social worker, expat from Germany and others.
Ekaterina notes that she feels pleased to see Human Library be such a success in Nizhny, adding that it will probably happen on a regular basis from now on and hopes the collection of human books to expand. |
