18.01.2012 | An Incredible Event for the Seniors at "Sosnovaya Usadba"
Kaliningrad, RUSSIA - The time has come to remember that it isn't just the children in orphanages who are in need of care and attention, but also the elderly. That's why volunteers and alumni from FLEX, UGRAD and IVLP programs went to celebrate the still recent holidays with residents at "Sosnovaya Usadba" (Pine Manor) home for the elderly. On January the 15th, 2012, they held an incredible event for the seniors while showering them with genuine interest and conversation. There are currently 27 persons residing in the home, from ages 58 to 98.
Planning for the event, the volunteers put together small souvenirs and treats for an informal snack-time. A round of the classic game "Loto," even helped generate spontaneous conversation, as everyone played with eager interest. Most memorable, however, were the paper flowers which were created under the guidance of Evgeniya Gurova, an employee at Gurevskiy Art House. The flowers, handmade by the alumni, were given to their hosts at the elderly home. In addition to all of the positive emotions and feelings, group crafts and snacking, all participants (both young and old) sang traditional Russian folk songs.
