American Suburbs by Andrew McKernan
25.01.2010 | Lecture "American Suburbs: Architecture and Ideology"
On January 27 the American Center hosted a lecture entitled "American Suburbs: Architecture and Ideology." Our guest speaker was Andrew McKernan, a Fulbright Student who is in Moscow for the 2009-2010 academic year. This was Andrew's second presentation in the AMC. The conference hall was crowded by sixty-four people who gathered to learn about American urban sprawl and the resulting realm of suburbia. Andrew's presentation included a discussion of the architecture of nuclear family homes and the general layout of suburban towns. He also examined the ideological and psychological ramifications of suburbia and "sleeping communities" as built environments in which humans live and with which they interact. During Q&A, Andrew McKernan was questioned about Russian architecture and infrastructure, and differences between British and American architectural styles. The discussion also touched the "cars lifestyle" in industrial countries and differences in construction materials in Russia and across the United States. At the end Andrew told about his favorite places in Moscow and its underground. |
