In February two meetings of Tomsk AC movie club were dedicated to the celebration of Black History Month. At first our visitors saw the historical movie “Amistad” directed by Steven Spielberg after William A. Owens’ Slave Mutiny. Both of them are based on the true story of a slave mutiny that took place aboard a ship of the same name in 1839, and the legal battle that followed. Unfortunately main heroes could not return back home and found themselves in the United States where they were judged as rebels. Spielberg described the events in such a way that everybody who watched this film could feel with heroes.
Then on February, 25 Brendan Mulvihill running the Club this academic year chose for showing and discussion “The Tuskegee Airmen” by Robert Markowitz. This professionally made picture with great play of the main heroes shows the United States in the times of World War II, the military training of young Afro-American pilots in the US Air Force base. Their strong wish to fly, to make a contribution in the victory over fascism beat the racial prejudices of that time.
Both films made the impression on the auditory, helped them to learn a lot about Afro-American history and racial antagonisms in the United States, to feel the complexity of these problems in modern society and progress in their solving.
