50 States: Discover New Mexico!
21.02.2010 | 50 States: Discover New Mexico!
On February 21 monthly project “50 States: Discover America!” took place at the American Corner. As a speaker we had Chris Rasmussen, the leader of the weekly English Discussion club at Perm American Corner. Chris Rasmussen spoke about one of the states where he got to live in for a year, New Mexico. New Mexico is located in the southwestern region of the United States of America. The state's total area is 121,665 square miles. The population is 1,984,356. It is bordered by the state of Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Arizona, Utah and also Mexico. Chris came there after he had finished college. He took a position of a reporter at a local newspaper called Farmington Daily. At Farmington he and his brother Jimmy had spent a lot of happy days: doing outdoor activities like hiking, snowboarding, etc. He also had enjoyed his job a lot as he got to visit different events and places. The most memorable one was the balloon festival. As climate in New Mexico is very dry it is a popular place for balloon competitions. Chris also spoke about the ethnical diversity of the state: almost half of population are people of Mexican descent (42%), American Indian or Alaskan Native are about 9.46%. Chris covered one of the Native American Beauty Contest (Navajo). He was surprised with the fact that one of the assignments for the competitors was to slaughter a sheep. On the whole, the meeting was very interesting and informative. Chris shared his own impressions on the state New Mexico, showed his pictures and made us think of New Mexico as one of the most picturesque and unusual states. |
