40th Anniversary of Earth Day

22.04.2010 | Earth Day at Tomsk AC

On April 22 a new book and magazine exhibition «40th Anniversary of Earth Day» was organized at Tomsk American Center. This day CNN documentary films about the condition of the environment were showed and then current ecological problems were discussed at the English Speaking Club. Besides general questions, the participants discussed personal attitude to the present environmental conditions and what we can really change in it. Tomsk AC representatives told the audience about the history of the International Earth Day which appeared in 19th century at J. Sterling Morton’s initiative. Since that time Americans have started the tradition to plant trees on 22nd of April. In 1970 this date was announced the International Earth Day when more than 20 million people in different countries took part in various ecological meetings and events. This year is the 40th anniversary of the Earth Day. The main aim of this day is to unite people all over the World in order to protect the environment and to attract attention to the problems of climate change, agriculture, fresh water, recycling and others.
